You are never going to build wealth and financial freedom off a paycheck. It’s not going to happen, and I don’t care how big of a paycheck that might be. A comfortable living can be obtained, but the type of money that frees one’s soul to pursue the nature of life apart from being an economic vehicle doesn’t come with a paystub. Most of us are trying to build wealth on a paycheck right now and it isn’t working. We get a 3% to 5% raise at our annual appraisal and then the kid needs braces. Perhaps we toil away and get that nice promotion and then, the HVAC unit goes out on your house. A paycheck, of any size, simply doesn’t cut it and AOC doesn’t understand that because she’s never done anything other than try to earn a paycheck. That would all be fine and well as many Americans are content with the paycheck life and many do live quite comfortably off of it. It’s all they need and all they want. AOC, on the other hand, is trying destroy America’s vehicle to building personal wealth and freedom. Sadly, as the Amazon incident in New York shows, she is going to take a lot of good people’s paychecks with her. Angry at the amount of water leaking into the boat, AOC assaults the boat. Upset that the AC unit isn’t cooling her fast enough she takes a hammer to the coolant line. The average American is never going to build wealth and financial freedom off of a paycheck. I submit that’s a good thing for America is it inspires some of the greatest feats of entrepreneurship known to man.
You Can’t Really Blame AOC
In all fairness to AOC, I think she is far less a culprit to blame that Bernie Sanders. AOC is a 29-year-old kid who has never attempted to build a business and like most ignorance, it exists in a void of knowledge and experience. Whether it is her believing America can spend a $21 trillion dollar accounting error from the Pentagon or that New York can spend a tax break for a company that is no longer coming to provide jobs and more tax revenue, she doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. Comrade Bernie on the other hand is a grown man. He’s had the privy of time and history to assess socialism and if the man still has an affection for it that is on him. As the great philosopher once said, “Stupid is as stupid does.”
Personally, I had nothing but an academic understanding of capitalism until recently. I’ve always had a decent job and a decent paycheck which had somewhat lulled me into a sense of complacency as to where those paychecks really come from. Ladies and gents, it is actually quite difficult to be captain and commander of your own economic destiny and those that risk all to make it happen don’t do it for paycheck lifestyle. If that were the case, I’d rather just have a paycheck. It’s much easier and someone else bears the burden of that responsibility. AOC knows nothing other than paycheck life and for that, she’s missing the point.
Count the Cost and Make a Choice
Whether you believe the Bible or not, I’d submit that most humans can find some wisdom that is both timeless and poignant. In Luke 14:31, Jesus is dropping some wisdom on the cost of following him. He says, “Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand? And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace…” Now, because my hypocrisy only goes so far, I’ll also point out that Jesus regularly warned against the dangers of wealth and greed. Americans with great wealth would do well to consider those words and let that lead them to unprecedented acts of compassion. In fact, if more wealthy Americans heed those words as individuals, I think the socialist would have less steam to assault the system. But I digress.
When a business owner or entrepreneur sets out to enter the turbulent and unforgiving economic fray, he too must count the cost. If you don’t think entrepreneurship comes with a cost, sacrifice and personal hardship then you have never tried it. The salaried worker expects over time at 40 hours a week whereas the entrepreneur calls a 40-hour week just Monday and Tuesday. It’s hard charting your own course and not everyone seems to be cut out for and that’s ok. Don’t take this article as me railing against the salaried worker. Some of the finest men and women on this planet are salaried workers, but here is what AOC doesn’t get. The salaried worker only has a job because of the entrepreneur who risked all after counting the cost. There is nothing wrong with the king who chose peace after counting the cost and there is nothing wrong the salaried worker who decided, “No thanks, a paycheck is good enough for me.” That being said guys, we can’t assault the king who counted the cost, went to war and emerged victorious. Rich people are not the problem in America and if AOC could see past her paycheck life she might realize that.
