This is a perfect example of the sort of cherry picking and sensationalism utilized in what is considered to be “traditional and morally accurate” news media.
Trump’s alleged statement has roiled emotions with his (debunked and, in this case, exaggerated) claims that the Mexican government is sending “rapists” and other violent criminals into the U.S. as unauthorized immigrants.
Kaine has embellished the controversy by saying Trump has said: “All Mexicans are rapists.”
The actual quote is as follows:
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” Trump said. “They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
This is a generalization based on personal opinion. Whether that has a place in a Presidential Debate is more of a social and psychological discussion than a factual one.
Discernible Truth must determine this statement technically and patently false.
