Those afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome have done everything they possibly can to advance their belief that President Donald Trump is a racist. We’re not just talking about the plethora of Trump bashers on social media and the interwebs either. There are allegedly impartial members of the mainstream press that have zero problem attempting to advance the irresponsible and unfounded accusation directed towards the commander-in-chief.
For reasons that remain incredibly unclear, those that tout these claims seem to believe that it advances the conversation. Reality tells a different story, because the narrative does little more than increase the divide and exacerbate tensions. Call us crazy, but those who have achieved even a modicum of success are well aware of the consequences of their actions.
The press knows very well how to inspire clicks, likes, views, and whatnot, not to mention how to inspire anger, fear, and resentment. Think about it: why do so many stories revolve around inspiring one of those emotions? The short answer is that people buy into it, and the gluttons for punishment will often go back to the well for more.
Another example of the irresponsible behavior of the press came to light this week. The president called out a CNN personality for an inflammatory interview he had with a guest. In short, Don Lemon and NBA superstar LeBron James engaged in a little Trump bashing, and the president was less than pleased
“Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!” Trump shared.
As always, the press hopped on and bashed the president unmercifully while paying zero attention to what sparked his ire. Lemon was quick to dig into his bag of talking points and pull out the race card.
“Referring to African Americans as dumb is one of the oldest canards of America’s racist past — and present — that black people are of inferior intelligence,” he said. “Let me not mince words here: This president traffics in racism and is fueled by bullying — from keeping children at the border in cages to bullying journalists at every one of his rallies,”
He would go on to explain that the president “divides by race and tries to conquer decency by smearing and besmirching the truth and the people who fight to uphold it.”
While we can certainly understand why Lemon would be taken aback by being called out so publicly by the president – and also acknowledge his right to respond – that’s about as far as we’ll go. Exactly where did Trump make a racist remark by questioning Lemon’s intelligence? The answer is nowhere. Lemon is desperately attempting to make this about race, but he failed miserably.
That’s not for lack of trying. He also had the assistance of other liberal outlets. For example, here’s a headline from the Huffington Post that celebrates Lemon’s response to Trump:
“Don Lemon Schools The Don In The White House,” the headline read.
At the risk of Lemon dealing out additional race cards, that headline is about the dumbest one we have come across in recent times. He ‘schooled’ the president? On what, exactly? Is Huffington Post aiming for the middle school lunchroom audience or just attempting to dumb down the populace as much as possible with ridiculous stories?
Form a bottom line perspective, no one comes out smelling like roses here. While we certainly understand the president has his own style and marches to his own drummer, there remains a lot to be said for staying above the fray and acting presidential. He did neither in this case, and it would be lovely if he would lay off the insults. Those who are not afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome can easily see through CNN and Lemon’s bias, and he doesn’t need to waste his time correcting the record.
As for Lemon, if the best that he can come up with is the race card, then he’s making it appear like he has nothing resembling a valid argument. He comes across looking small and weak, and he didn’t exactly refute Trump’s argument about his intelligence. That’s not to say that he’s dumb as the president suggested, but he’s showing a serious lack of judgement by resorting to a tired talking point to win the argument. He lost it, and he has no one to blame but himself.
This was a prime opportunity for Lemon to tout his wits and demonstrate how he’s interested in advancing the conversation and that he’s not obsessed with identity politics that divide the nation and holds it back. He didn’t do that, and his credibility has taken another massive body blow as a result.
