Many moons ago, news anchors read the news of the day. They managed to do this without interjecting their personal opinions, as the blurring of news and commentary was viewed as a gigantic no-no. Fast forward to today, and that line has been completely obliterated. There’s not much in the way of news reading these days, but there is a whole bunch of opinion being pushed forth as if it were fact.
CNN is one of the biggest offenders in this regard. There once was a time when CNN was a go-to place of sorts for the news of the day. That’s nothing but a quaint memory at this point. The network rarely shares anything of substance on the news front. Instead, viewers are treated to an endless array of carefully crafted talking points being espoused by network script readers, not to mention what seems to be a never-ending panel discussion which prides itself on verbally assailing President Donald Trump.
CNN’s Jake Tapper recently provided a perfect example of how far the network that employs him has fallen. During a recent broadcast, he spent an inordinate amount of time rotating between lecturing the President of the United States and wagging his finger in the same direction.
Mediaite shares the highlights.
“Part of a pattern that you’re familiar with, I’m sure, where the president disregards facts in favor of whatever reality he finds most politically or personally expedient. ‘Vaccines cause autism.’ That’s false, but he believes it. He saw multiple New Jersey Muslims celebrating 9/11 on television. That’s false, but he believes it. The list goes on and on, but now the consequences are literally life and death, and the president is ignoring the conclusions of the experts who work in his administration.”
Tapper topped off this monologue by comparing Trump’s climate report denial with his recent decision to ignore the CIA’s “high confidence” assessment that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman ordered Jamal Khashoggi to be killed. There was also a comparison to Trump’s reluctance to acknowledge what the intelligence community has said about Russia’s 2016 election-meddling.
Exactly how is the above lecture news? It’s high time for CNN to remove the ‘N’ for news in its name and replace it with a ‘P’ for propaganda.
