Could Progressive Wins in the Primaries Hurt the Dems in November?
When 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shocked the political world by upsetting the 4th ranked Democrat in the house progressives hailed it as a sign of things to come. Representative Joseph Crowley (D) was a 10-term veteran of the House and presumed heir apparent to Nancy Pelosi. By all accounts, he should have won easily and marched his way to power. What he and many Democrats failed to take into account was the burgeoning youth movement more aligned with Bernie Sanders than traditional Democratic power structures. With the stunning victory of Ocasio-Cortez the Democratic Party now has a new superstar and the Republicans now have a new target. However, it is fair question to ask if the rise of progressives in the primaries will wind up hurting the Democrats in November?
An Enemy of the Right Just in Time for Elections
Given that his nation had just twice elected Barack Obama, one could make the argument that America was trending left. Obama was certainly more liberal than previous Democratic Presidents and he seemed to boldly go left where no President had gone before him. Then came the election that shocked the world. The United States of America elected Donald Trump to be President the left hit a major roadblock.
For better or worse, Trump was able galvanize the support of conservatives who feel they were left behind by the Obama administration. Hitting on all the major talking points from immigration to tax relief, the right had a new hero. The only problem with midterms is that not only are they not voting for their hero, but they are short an enemy. Not every supporter of Donald Trump was a far right individual and many may very well have been ready to vote for a Democrat out of displeasure for some of the things Trump has done. That was until they began to trumpet the rise of the “progressive blue wave” and now, conservatives may very well have their enemy.
Democrats are Showing Fear
It is one thing to watch a moderate Democrat rise to power, but it is another altogether to watch a progressive become your representative. Ocasio-Cortez is a self-avowed Democratic Socialist unafraid to throw around the term socialist. She went so far as to say that in safe “blue” districts, representatives should swing for the fences on the most progressive ideas available. The more she speaks the more conservatives a frightened to the core. If we have learned anything from recent elections is that fear is a powerful motivator.
America would hardly be characterized as a progressive nation. Fellow Democrat Senator Tammy Duckworth went so far as to say that Ocasio-Cortez is not going to help the Democrats win the Midwest. While she may be running in a safe blue district, Republicans are wasting no time making Ocasio-Cortez the new face of the Democratic Party. Statements from Democrats like Tammy Duckworth show they are afraid that it just might work.
Is America Progressive?
The United States of America has broadly been classified as a centrist conservative nation. Even many Democrats own guns and are passionate about the 2nd Amendment while supporting lower taxation and free market principles. This is why the balance of power routinely changes hands in America from Republican to Democrat, but not much changes regarding those basic principles. Most Americans grew up in an era where defeating the Communist and Socialist were seen as patriotic duties. Now you are asking for Americans to vote for a proud Socialist?
That may not be only question at hand, but it sure seems like the it’s the question Republicans want Americans asking this November. Most Americans don’t fear a Democrat as even those who are Conservatives have grown up side by side with them. Americans do fear socialism and the smart political play says pander to that fear. Expect to hear and see a lot more of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the future and you’ll likely be hearing it from the Republicans.
